Reviews

Xbox Live Marketplace has a wide variety of indie games. While there are many great games worth checking out, there are unfortunately some terrible games as well. However, these games are not terrible based on their design ideas. After all, the reason the indie market is intriguing is because of the hidden talent; the expressive games that can go beyond even high-budget games in their story-telling and game ideas. The indie games that fail, do so because of one or two major reasons, implementation and time-constraints. Some games clearly need more production time or need an idea to be incorporated better, but sometimes it just doesn't happen. Because of this we have separated our reviews into two lists, games worth playing and games not worth playing. When we compiled these lists, we also took into account whether we'd buy the game.

These games have proven they are worth the time and money to play. They are generally bug-free and offer an overall enjoyable experience. Check out the complete list of
games worth playing.

Not Worth Playing

These games have proven they are not worth the time and money to play. They may contain multiple bugs or offer an overall experience that is far from enjoyable. Check out the complete list of games not worth playing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What is an Indie Game?

Answer: In simplest terms, an indie game can be classified as a game created by a small developer. This developer (usually a team of ten people or less) does not have the financial backing of a publisher and are motivated by their own desires to create the game(s) they imagine. They have much more freedom then an actual developer as they run off their own schedule and restraints. The indie games we, ExL Studios, most often refer to are Xbox Live Indie Games. These are indie games that Microsoft allows to be purchased on their Xbox Live Marketplace.

Question: How do I download Indie Games?

Answer: To download an indie game, first turn on Xbox 360 and sign into XBOX Live. Then navigate through the Xbox Live Marketplace (Game Marketplace=>Explore Game Content=>Indie Games) and browse through the games. Make a selection by clicking on a game and there will be two download styles. The full version requires a specific amount of Microsoft Points (as priced by the developer) while the trial version allows for the game to be tested before the decision of purchasing is made.

Question: How are Indie Games rated?

Answer: Indie Games are rated by the community and other game developers. They are not rated by Microsoft or the ESRB.

Question: Can I play an Indie Game when not signed into Xbox Live?

Answer: Unfortunately, Microsoft requires users to be signed into Xbox Live when they play an indie game, even if the game has no online elements.

Question: How long can I play an Indie Game Trial?

Answer: Depending on the game's release a trial version will last for either four or eight minutes. Older games have the four minute trials, while newer games have the eight minute trials. When the time limit expires, the game will stop and will prompt for the user to either exit the game or purchase to continue playing. The trial can be played an infinite amount of times within the given time constraints.

Question: Why don't Indie Game Trials have all features playable?

Answer: The developer (with a few limits by Microsoft) decides what to include in the trial version. Some features, such as online, will probably not be playable in a trial version. Usually key features are removed to entice the player to purchase the full game to experience all the game has to offer.
